Event Ambassador

Position Type: Seasonal, Part-Time 
Timeline: Deadline to Apply: January 15th, 2025, at 5 pm. Must be available for interview from January 20th to January 23rd, 2025. Must be able to attend in-person training to be conducted from February 11th to February 13th, 2025.

About Sankofa Square  

Located at the intersection of Yonge & Dundas Streets in downtown Toronto, Sankofa Square is an outdoor event space adjacent to the busiest road junction in Canada. Set up in 2003 as a service agency of the City of Toronto, we are a small staff team that manages and operates the square as a public and welcoming space for a wide range of commercial and community clients. In a typical year, Sankofa Square may host up to 200 event days. Sankofa Square is looking for Event Ambassadors to join our team for the presentation of a public art installation in mid-February until mid-March 2025. 

The Role 

Reporting to the Event Coordinator, the Event Ambassador will facilitate the daily operations of the public art installation by representing the Square on-site. The successful candidate(s) will act as Sankofa Square’s front-line, public facing customer service representative and be the primary contact on-site to the public. Successful candidates can expect to work in an outdoor environment that will include evenings and weekends in often physical demanding conditions based on the outdoor nature of the installation. The successful candidates can expect to work 3-4 days per week on-site. A training session will be mandatory for successful candidates.  

The Working Environment 

This role is a part-time, seasonal position that includes daytime, evening and weekend shifts. Please note: This role will work at Sankofa Square and Event Ambassadors will be outdoors for the duration of their shift.  Sankofa Square has 24/7 security contractors on-site as well as custodial contractors who will work alongside Event Ambassadors.  

Specific Responsibilities 

  • Act as a venue representative to the general public. 

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the art installation. 

  • Assist with the physical opening and closing of the installation, including moving barricades, moving tents and setting up signage 

  • Identify and report any technical issues, damage or other concerns about the installation or general visitor experience. 

  • Liaise with on-site facility contractors during operations in the event of necessary duties, repairs or services. 

  • Support the data collection of attendance numbers and surveys. 

  • Prepare daily event reports for Event Coordinator. 

  • In the case of inclement weather, work alongside custodial contractors to clear snow off and around the installation. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications 

  • Due to the short-term nature of this employment, this position is only open to those persons presently legally allowed to work in Canada according to the laws and regulations of the province or territory where they work.  Either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a person granted refugee protection under the law who have Canadian Citizenship, a Permanent Resident Card or a current work visa. 

  • Experience in a customer service environment, including working with the public. 

  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills and respond effectively to customer concerns and service issues as they arise. 

  • Experience in an event environment, including familiarity with load-in and out procedures and crowd management. 

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with other facility contractors. 

  • Flexibility to work weekdays, weeknights and weekends. 

  • Ability to perform moderate lifting (up to 40 lbs) and light physical work. 

  • Ability to work outdoors in colder temperatures for long periods of time.
