August 19, 2025 - Media Release: Sankofa Day at Sankofa Square Unveils Full Lineup and Schedule Ahead of August 23rd Celebration
With just days to go, organizers of Sankofa Day at Sankofa Square have released the full schedule and lineup for the inaugural event, inviting all of Toronto to a free celebration of culture and community on Saturday, August 23rd. The day is a dynamic blend of music, art, sports, culture, and powerful storytelling, designed to be a celebration that welcomes everyone.

August 13, 2025 - Melanin Market celebrates Emancipation Month, King’s Plate, and more Sankofa Day Programming Announcements
Melanin Market (August 15) celebrates Emancipation Month with Black and POC-owned vendors, food, and music, followed by the King's Plate Garden Party (August 16), which brings the excitement of the horse race to downtown with live streaming, games, and a beer garden. New announcements for Sankofa Day on August 23 have also been released, highlighting a variety of programming including Caribbean Film Festival screenings, an Afro-Caribbean culture celebration with Jerk X Jollof, and a special performance by Natasha Fisher as part of the iDREAM Awards.

August 7, 2025 - Oistins in the 6ix give a taste of Barbados, Toronto Diversity Festival, Melanin Market returns, King’s Plate Garden Party, and more Sankofa Day Programming Announcements
Sankofa Square hosts Oistins in the 6ix (August 8), a taste of Barbados, and the Toronto Diversity Festival (August 9). Next week features the Melanin Market (August 15) and the King’s Plate Garden Party (August 16). Upcoming Sankofa Day announcements on August 23 include a special free DJ performance by Kardinal Offishall as part of the iDREAM Awards, alongside a community run, a Toronto Raptors basketball clinic, HOOPQUEENS games, and a set by DJ collective Afrique Like Me.

August 1, 2025 - Sankofa Day Programming Highlights, Carnival Village, Oistins in the 6ix give a taste of Barbados, and the Toronto Diversity Festival
This week, get a taste of the Caribbean at Carnival Village (August 1-2). Next week, experience the best of Barbados with Oistins in the 6ix (August 8). The weekend continues with the Toronto Diversity Festival (August 9), celebrating cultures from around the world. New programming announcements for Sankofa Day on August 23, featuring a community run led by Hill Run Club, a new art installation by Nicole Nomsa Moyo, a Toronto Raptors Basketball Clinic for youth, HOOPQUEENS basketball games, and a closing party with renowned collective MOONSHINE.

July 14, 2025 - Sankofa Square Officially Opens with Canada's First Major Public Sankofa Day Celebration
Toronto is set to celebrate a historic cultural milestone on Saturday, August 23, with a landmark Sankofa Day event and the official opening of Sankofa Square, Canada’s most prominent public space. This powerful, free, full-day event marks a significant new cultural tradition for Toronto, rooted in remembrance, healing, and the vibrant future of the Square.

Melanin Market is an exciting five-market showcase of the incredible talent of local Black artisans and creators throughout the summer. The series kicks off on Wednesday, June 25, with a Bold, Beautiful & Women-Owned-themed market in collaboration with Hey Black Girl! and The Villij.
