Understanding Sankofa Day: Looking Back, Building Forward
Sankofa Day 2025. Photo by Max Power.
What is Sankofa Day?
Celebrated globally on August 23, Sankofa Day coincides with UNESCO’s International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. It is a dedicated time to honour ancestral memory, pay tribute to a profound spirit of resilience, and celebrate the rich, enduring contributions of global Black culture.
The Meaning Behind the Word
Sankofa is a Twi word from the Akan people of Ghana, translated literally as “to go back and get it” (San – to return; Ko – to go; Fa – to fetch). Today, it is recognized worldwide as a powerful pan-African symbol of cultural affirmation and self-reflection.
Why We Celebrate
True to our festival theme—“Looking Back, Building Forward”—Sankofa Day is a reminder that we must look to the lessons and wisdom of our shared history as a foundational tool to build a more vibrant, joyful, and inclusive future for generations to come.
